Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in Nearly 30 Months

19 of Medvedev's 21 titles have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback the Russian player claimed his initial trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition championship match.

Medvedev, a former number one, has experienced a torrid season, achieving just one win at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in especial - led to him dropping out of the top ten and ultimately separating with long-time trainer Cervara.

Presently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently improved in the last few weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over challenger Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's first championship since the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt since March of the previous year.

Success also indicates he has won twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"For the first time I have attended a event with my two daughters simultaneously, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," commented ranked player the champion.

"This title is in dedication of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I got when my child my daughter was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his past six finals, featuring in Halle earlier this year.

Medvedev's counter-punching approach and frequent reactions on the tennis court had led observers to doubt if his ability to compete at the top level was over.

But the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, making an effort to come to the net and compete positively, backed up by an improved serving game.

The champion recovered from a break down in the opening set against the challenging opponent, securing four of the concluding five points to gain the advantage.

The pair exchanged breaks in the second set before Moutet, striving for his initial ATP Tour title, gained dominance to force a decider.

He rescued four early-game chances in a close final set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.

Fittingly, Medvedev secured the title with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman unable to control a return after over two and a half hours.
