Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
