The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
