Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
